Resorbable Bandage with "On Demand" Norfloxacin Release for the Healing of Burn Wounds (BurnHeal)

The project has fabricated a material, under the form of non-woven mats, on the basis of a naturally originating biopolymer, which meets all conditions required for a dressing that ensures scarless wound-healing. The non-woven mat slowly releases both an antibiotic and an antifungal agent in order to prevent wound infection, while also undergoing degradation as the wound is healing, therefore not requiring removal. The resulted biodegradation products of the material are not only harmless towards the organism it is applied to, but they also aid the healing process.

Representative images of the non-woven mats, their application on full-thickness burns (II-III), and the appearance of the burn after 21 days. 

 

The results of the project were disseminated as 4 published research articles, 6 participations at international conferences (1 invited lecture, 3 oral communications and 2 posters) and 1 patent request, as follows:
